There is no icon that indicates you have a message when someone PM's you.
I tested this by sending a message to myself and still, nothing.

oh, i see the your notifications.. but had you not pointed it out, i wouldn't really have payed attention to it.. it doesn't really stick out at all where it is
the flashing icon was much more to the point, and more noticeable..
