OTTAWA–Canada has squarely rejected the results of Zimbabwe's election, denouncing leader Robert Mugabe's brutal tactics and imposing new measures against his "desperate and illegitimate" regime.

Although humanitarian aid to Zimbabwe will continue, Ottawa said that it is going to impose restrictions on travel, work and study on senior Zimbabwean government, military and police officials, and their families, "to send a message of solidarity to the people of Zimbabwe and convey our rejection of the actions of a desperate and illegitimate regime."
Canada will also:

• Summon Harare's ambassador in Ottawa, Florence Zano Chideya, to make its displeasure clear.
• Reconfirm its long-standing policy against exporting military goods to Zimbabwe.
• Prohibit any aircraft registered in Zimbabwe to land in, or to fly over, Canada.

In addition, Ottawa encouraged Canadian companies to voluntarily divest from Zimbabwe. Bilateral trade totalled $11 million in 2006, down from $430 million in 1999.

According to Statistics Canada, 6,525 Zimbabwean-born immigrants were in Canada in 2006. Zimbabwe's current population is about 12 million.
Zimbabweans in Toronto welcomed Ottawa's decision to take action against Mugabe.
