He's right, the Dominican is actually pretty dangerous, not Cancun dangerous but still dangerous.

If your friends want to go somewhere fun and safe, try Cuba ( Varadero>Havana) you can still get drunk off your asses and tan. But you won't get bothered by the locals( robbed, raped or just harassed) because they are a communist country and the locals fear the government.

If your dead set on the the Dominican ( I've been to both, stayed in a Villa in Santa Domingo as well and Cuba is definitely so much better, unless you guys want to get high because you will not find any bud on that island and I wouldn't recommend trying) tell him that over a million people visit every year and theirs been like 2 foreign abductions ( they weren't even in the dominican) your chances of winning the lottery are much higher.

Neither is as you will probably get robbed

I was able to buy weed in the Dominican but thats only because my buddy spoke creole and was able to get some from the billion sketchy Haitians that live in the Dominican.

But in Cuba you will not find any and if you ask the wrong person you'll be doing 20 years hard labour in a communist prison. Definitely not worth it.

I book all my international travel through a travel agent, but I have planned trips to Montreal and stuff using the internet.

My girlfriend used to say that in response to me insisting on certain Hotel chains.
Until I let her choose a hotel without reading reviews and by price and she got bit by bugs
Now we stay at the Marriot

But the quality of the resort will impact everything.
Do you want dirty ice in your drinks
Dirty towels?
Maybe randoms lurkers and beggars on the beach because they have shitty security
Do the staff speak english?
Are their sketchy guests? because its 180$ all inclusive

Do you really want diarhea for the whole time your there

4* and above at a minimum

Hotels make the biggest difference, trust me. When I went to Cancun last year. I went to oasis because its supposedly the spot where younger people go. The hotel was OK, nothing upper class or anything but the beach was amazing. Do you research and make sure you choose a 4 star and up hotel, anything under that I wouldn't trust.
