    Graffiti...Is it Art?

What do you think of graffiti? Recently my neighbourhood had all the children draw graffitti in one of our housing complexes and while some people appreciated it there were others who didn't.

Here is a very good article:
    http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/200...ws_insight.php

Depends on what kind. Weird shaped gang related writings - not art.

    Not art:

    Behind dundas west station lot.

    And this is art:

    Lawrence East

Not sure where this is one is from...
There is also a VERY good one at keele station parking lot. I will try and take pics next time I go there.

    In that pic
    it's not gang-relating writing..
it's a bunch of artists' tags/signatures (example of tagging)
The point for almost all taggers is to get their name EVERYWHERE and be known all across..usually referred to as "going All-city" in my opinion and possibly others..this is basically how Graffiti was modernized back in the late 60s- early 70s

it's only gang related when it is used to mark a turf..usually on a side of buildings..and they're wouldn't be ALOT of gang-related tags especially with all of them being different in one specific area..

I absolutely love that mural you see on the SRT line, the one you posted that's before Lawrence East. Holy Cow. There's also a very nice one between Royal York & Islington Stns on my way to work i think that's where it is, or maybe it IS the Keele one you mentioned. Either ways, it's gorgeous.

I am somewhat of a traditionalist when it comes to art and, again, find it a little easier to appreciate sculptural and architectural artworks as opposed to those painted on paper, or in this case, walls.

In my eyes, the true pieces of art are things such as the Parthenon, the Flavian Amphitheatre, Michelangelo's David, and many of the paintings done during the Romantic period.

So no, this is not art in my opinion.

So would you consider Van Gough, Dali, or Picasso art?

Most graffiti is just that...graffiti. There is still a lot of it though that is legitimately artistic.

It wouldn't be such a stretch to see this on a wall instead of a canvas:

No, no, and no. I suppose their 'artworks' qualify as art by general standards, but I've never been a fan of Impressionism, and thus not a fan of Van Gough, and certainly not a fan of Surrealism, and thus not a fan of Dalí or Picasso.

I've spoken about my contempt for Picasso in another topic somewhere on this forum, but, at the very least, Dali was a Francoist and that is something to be respected.
